Mrs. Dorothy Rice knew the importance of education. As the parents of 11 children, Mrs. Rice and her husband, Tommy, not only made sure their children graduated from high school, they stressed the importance of Higher Education. In 1993, their youngest received his degree, making all 11 children 1st generation college graduates. As a result of their commitment to excellence, they challenged each sibling to support one another and their community. The Tommy and Dorothy Rice Scholarship was developed.
Tommy Rice and Dorothy Woolfolk grew up near Wabbaseka, where their families worked together. They attended high school together and were married in 1952. She was 18, he was 17. "We married young and started our family right away, and then I realized that I really could have used more education," said Tommy Rice. "I was determined that if that weren't possible for me, it would be for my children."
Dorothy had a love for education and hats. Join us in celebrating her memory at Dorothy's Hats and High Tea. Proceeds from this event will provide financial assistance to current minority students at Ouachita Baptist University.
